Lesson 58

COMPOUND ADVERBS

Most of the outlines in the series below just join together existing outlines/short forms.

If in doubt, write each element separately with the normal outlines and short forms, and make a note to correct your knowledge later on.

(A) HERE THERE WHERE SERIES

All these use normal outlines/short forms joined together:

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

hereafter thereafter whereafter

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

hereat thereat whereat

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

hereby thereby whereby

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

herein therein wherein

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

hereto thereto whereto

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

hereunder thereunder whereunder

All these use full strokes for "of on with" and not the Short Forms, in order not to clash with some of the above:

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

hereof thereof whereof

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

hereon thereon whereon

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

herewith therewith wherewith

therefrom wherefore wherewithal heretofore

(B) EVER AND SOEVER SERIES

The "ever" part causes the word to refer to a general or repeating possible situation, and the "so" part adds intensity or emphasis.

Where the hook of "ever" does not join, just the V stroke is used. Those contracted in some way under underlined:

Basic outlines:

The compound versions:

whyever wherever whichever however*

* Short form

SO

SOEVER

Pitman's New Era Shorthand
whosoever whomsoever whensoever whatsoever

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

wheresoever whichsoever howsoever*   * Contraction

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

whithersoever whereinsoever whencesoever*

* This word is unlikely to sound any different from "whensoever" unless the speaker is being very careful with pronunciation, therefore when transcribing context must be consulted to decide which the speaker said.

SUMMARY

  • Full stroke for “-of -on -with”, not the short Form

  • The R of “ever” is omitted where not convenient to write

  • In if doubt, write as two separate outlines and correct knowledge later
