Pitman's New Era Shorthand

treatment attachment detachment catchment employment

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

agreement assessment movement filament

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

*Omits the middle T

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

bereavement embarrassment development*

* Optional contraction

Where the -mnt stroke cannot join, use an unvocalised -nt instead

Pitman's New Era Shorthand
postponement consignment commencement refinement

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

resentment imprisonment enhancement

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

alignment (aligned) Compare: liniment

When using -nt for this suffix, a third place vowel immediately before that syllable remains with the preceding stroke, as there is an unwritten M sound before it:

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

accompaniment merriment monument tenement

Care must be taken when writing the -nt for the suffix, so that it does not look like an Ing stroke, which would have the same meaning when the verb with -ing is being used as a noun. For extra clarity, insert the vowel before the Ing stroke:

Pitman's New Era Shorthand
pavement paving, achievement achieving

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

confinement confining, announcement announcing

(B) -MENTAL -MENTALLY -MENTALITY

Disjoin the -mnt stroke for all three of the above suffixes, although for convenience only one longhand version is shown below:

Pitman's New Era Shorthand
experimental departmental detrimental temperamental

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

fundamental incremental environmental judgemental

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

sentimental instrumental monumental segmental governmental*

* Using the Contraction

Exceptions: mental mentally elemental Note: elementary

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

(C) -FULNESS -LESSNESS -LOUSNESS

Disjoined FS and LS

(D) -SHIP

Joined or disjoined Ish, with no vowel sign.

Joined where possible:

Pitman's New Era Shorthand
friendship township partnership ownership relationship

Pitman's New Era Shorthand
horsemanship statesmanship sportsmanship workmanship

Disjoined if a clear angle cannot be obtained:

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

leadership scholarship apprenticeship membership

Pitman's New Era Shorthand
hardship stewardship courtship discipleship dictatorship

These are clearer in full:

Pitman's New Era Shorthand
fellowship worship apostleship airship/heirship starship

"ship" (=boat) used as a noun or verb is in full, as a normal outline:

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

steamship flagship warship unship reship

If it cannot be joined clearly, rather than disjoin the whole of "ship", it copies the suffix by using an disjoined Ish, with no vowel sign:

Pitman's New Era Shorthand
fire ship, spaceship battleship

(E) -ISM

The default way to write this is with Circle S + M:

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

tourism realism heroism egotism archaism

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

exorcism (exorcise and compare exercise) occultism

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

unionism cynicism atheism neologism

A few words in -cism use the Ses Circle, where this joins more easily:

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

criticism (criticise) fanaticism Catholicism agnosticism

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

stoicism (stoic) narcissism (narcissus) parasitism

After a final hook, Zee + M is used:

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

perfectionism positivism Americanism Darwinism

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

organism objectivism subjectivism*

* The Optional Contraction is preferable

(F) The outlines below are exceptional in that they cannot show all the vowels, the missing vowel is shown underlined. This is tolerated in order to avoid overlong outlines:

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

Protestant Protestantism despotism

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

patriotism favouritism pragmatism

(M) Contractions

Pitman's New Era Shorthand
advertise-d-ment govern-ed government governor*

*Optional Contraction

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

vegetarian* vegetarianism*

*Optional Contraction
