Lesson 38

HAY REVISION

This revision includes outlines that were not appropriate in the earlier Hay Lesson.

(A) Upward Hay is used when joined to another stroke, alone if it has a final attachment (hook, circle or loop), or when halved:

Joined to another stroke: hope heavy hang hedge

Pitman's New Era Shorthand
Alone if it has a final attachment: hen half haze hose/hoes hoses host Hester

Halved: height hat hut heat hunt halved

(B) Downward Hay is used when it is the only consonant stroke, with no attachments, and the derivatives, or joined to plain horizontals K G:

Pitman's New Era Shorthand
high highly highest highway highness Highgate

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

hoe hoeing hie hieing

(C) If the K or G has an initial hook, upward Hay is used as it joins better:

Both Upward and Downward Hay can be used medially or finally, whichever makes the best join:

(D) Tick Hay is the Downward Hay shortened to a tick before M, Upward L, Ar ("HoMeLieR") and also Imp and Rer:

home humus hemp hump

Pitman's New Era Shorthand
hall whole help hill heal

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

If the M or Imp has an initial hook, upward Hay is used as it joins better:

hammer Homer hamper Humber
hammered hampered

(E) Dot Hay

Dot Hay is a thin dot that is used medially where the other versions of the stroke would be awkward or impossible, or to gain a shorter outline. It is never used initially or finally. It is always written paired with the vowel that follows the H sound.

It is written on the outermost side of a dot vowel:

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

perhaps mishap unhappy Manhattan exhale

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

figurehead unhealthy uphill downhill

It is written on the beginning side of a dash vowel or diphthong sign. This is because in the spoken word the H sound comes before the vowel sound:

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

apprehend apprehension armhole manhole

Pitman's New Era Shorthand
mouse-hole Whitehall household leasehold

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

 fishhook road-hog unhurt exhume

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

neighbourhood childhood greenhouse townhouse storehouse

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

alcohol alcoholic upholster upholstery

When using Dot Hay, the vowels occurring either side of the H sound remain with their respective strokes, whether they are first, second or third place ones:

Pitman's New Era Shorthand
Fahrenheit freehold livelihood

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

sparrow-hawk greyhound

Distinguishing outlines
