Lesson 31

SHUN HOOKS 1

LARGE SHUN HOOK

A large final hook represents the sound of -shun or -zhun, regardless of the longhand spelling. It is written approximately a third the length of the stroke. The indeterminate  sound (schwa) of "shun" is not shown in any way.

(A) Shun Hook on curves

Shun Hook is written inside curves:

fashion motion notion nation attention extension

intention mention lotion relation erosion session

A third place dot vowel is written inside the Shun Hook:

vision television mission admission

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

examination determination dimension lesion

A third place dash vowel or diphthong is written outside the Shun Hook, as they need more room:

delusion illusion fusion ammunition

(B) Shun Hook on straight strokes

Away from the vowel: On simple straight strokes (i.e. with no initial hook or circle), the Shun Hook is written on the opposite side to the vowel that precedes it. This has the advantage of indicating the presence of that vowel when vowel signs are omitted:

occasion attraction application obligation education

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

* These should always have the 2nd vowel inserted, to differentiate

(C) Right side of T D J

Shun Hook is written on the right side of simple T D J, as there are no pairs, there is always a vowel between those strokes and the shun. This has the advantage of preserving forward movement:

addition edition petition partition

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

tradition electrician invitation reputation

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

imitation dictation optician magician

(D) Away from a hook or circle or preceding curve (FVK VK LK)

The Shun Hook is written on the opposite side, in order to balance the outline, which helps to keep the stroke straight:

Circle: station sedition section discussion exception

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

reception hesitation impression expression

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

probation* faction fiction

* The balancing rule applies to this as well, as the two straight strokes are in the same direction

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

affection vacation location selection

(E) Add Circle S written small inside the Shun Hook:

options stations occasions fashions

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

missions nations relations rations

The Shun Hook does not take a Stee Loop, instead it uses a halved S stroke. In a few shun words, the final "-ist" has to be written upwards, and this is the only time that a stroke is written vertically upwards:
Pitman's New Era Shorthand

receptionist protectionist nutritionist

Pitman's New Era Shorthand
impressionist expressionist

Shun Hook does not combine with the N Hook, as it already changes sides on straight strokes for other reasons:

Pitman's New Era Shorthand
pension suspension tension

(F) Medially

The Shun Hook can be used in the middle of an outline, if it makes a good join with next stroke:

Pitman's New Era Shorthand
optional occupational additional traditional

Pitman's New Era Shorthand
occasional professional provisional

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

operational national intentional functional

Pitman's New Era Shorthand
passionate affectionate dictionary

Pitman's New Era Shorthand
visionary discretionary
stationery* stationary*

* These two move the Shun Hook to the other side, in order to join the Ray stroke, compare with "station" above

Reminder: PapER is stationERy, a cAR is stationARy

(G) Distinguishing Outlines

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

distinction* destination* (distinct* destiny)

* These omit the K sound

Short Forms

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

Contractions

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

description public/publish-ed* publication objection projection representation

* It is advisable to distinguish between "public" and "published" as the latter can also be used as an adjective e.g. "a collection of his public/published speeches." If necessary, write "published" as a full outline, with all full strokes, similar to the outline for "polished".

Pitman's New Era Shorthand
Derivatives: publicly publisher descriptions*

* The plural is a full outline, because adding a Circle S to the contraction would make it look similar to "discourse" (introduced in Lesson 34) which has a close meaning

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

electronic*

* Optional contraction

Omission Phrase

These phrases uses the Shun Hook for "information":
